Public consultation on the noise action plans
Five action plan proposals are brought to the public’s attention: the noise action plans against road traffic noise, against railway traffic noise, against aircraft noise, as well as against noise in the agglomerations of Luxembourg and of the South.
The action plans were established in accordance with the European Noise Directive 2002/49/EC, transposed into national law. Their development was coordinated by the Environment Agency, with the support of an interministerial committee and five working groups.
Noise is the second leading environmental cause of health problems after air pollution. The directive requires noise mapping, public information, and action plans. The measures aim to prevent exposure (urban planning, quiet zones, construction standards) and to correct critical situations (hot spots, noise reduction at the source, physical protections, insulation if necessary).
The action plans set out the national strategy for the prevention and remediation of noise pollution in the environment, based on strategic noise maps. They represent guiding documents expressing the will of the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to engage in efforts to reduce noise.
